Sustainability Coordinator

Primary Purpose of Position:

The Sustainability Coordinator supports the Director, Sustainability in all areas of the Boston Properties (BXP) sustainability program including reporting, public disclosures, marketing, communication, project management and other internal consulting to project teams.

Essential Functions:

Corporate Activities - Data Collection, Analysis, and Reporting

  • Analyzes the Company’s sustainability performance data for significant trends and specific property issues and prepares periodic reports for Executive Management that may include but not limited to financial models and the business case for resource conservation measure recommendations.

  • Assists in defining sustainability goals and tracks performance metrics to assess program effectiveness.

  • Coordinates the annual sustainability reporting process including the GRESB assessment, the NAREIT Leader in the Light Competition and similar submittals.

  • Assists in managing EPA’s Portfolio Manager Accounts for BXP’s reporting portfolio and implements best practices for data consistency across the enterprise. Helps to advance efforts to maximize ENERGY STAR program performance and enrollment.

  • Assists in producing and publishing an annual Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) sustainability report that provides objective measurements of company progress toward established stated goals and objectives as well as Sustainability Newsletters.

  • Assists in developing corporate marketing materials on sustainability for use in investor presentations, advertising and other branding opportunities.

  • Coordinates and organizes the Corporate Sustainability Steering Committee meetings to share best practices, emerging technologies and review of performance data for significant disclosures, including GRESB and public reporting of sustainability data.

  • Processes, edits and proofreads sustainability content using Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Adobe InDesign and Photoshop.

  • Updates and maintains the Sustainability section of BXP’s Website.

  • Coordinates meetings and conference calls with vendors, employees and other internal and external stakeholders.

  • Organizes and maintains Sustainability content on the shared drive.

  • Participates in organizations such as NAREIT, USGBC, the Real Estate Roundtable and ULI to keep abreast of best practices, technologies, regulatory issues and the initiatives industry peers are undertaking to address sustainability-related issues.

Regional Office Activities

  • Engages regions to collect case study images, regional stories and community involvement content.

  • Coordinates with regional offices to assist in establishing annual goals and objectives aimed at year-over-year improvement of sustainability performance.

  • Assist regional offices in evaluating asset level performance and recommend strategies for improvement of sustainability performance metrics as well as best practices.

  • Assists the Regional Leasing and Development groups to develop materials to market the Company’s sustainability achievements and practices.

  • Coordinates with the regional offices to establish periodic communications to tenants promoting sustainability awareness and participation.

Non-Essential Functions:

  • Perform day-to-day requests and special projects as directed by the Director, Sustainability and Senior Vice President, Finance & Planning.

Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in environmental studies, engineering, sustainability or related degree in management with an environmental focus is required.

  • Experience participating in sustainability efforts and programs, preferably within a real estate organization.

  • Comprehension with energy, emissions, water and waste units and performance metrics is preferred.

  • LEED Accredited Professional, LEED Green Associate and/or Certified Energy Manager designation, preferred.

  • Commercial Real Estate Energy Auditing, Commissioning, and LEED Project Administration/Management experience, preferred.

  • Knowledge of environmental, social and governance (ESG) reporting frameworks (e.g. GRESB, GRI) is preferred.

  • Ability to build relationships and work collaboratively at all levels of the organization as demonstrated in a prior work environment.

  • Strong organizational skills with ability to set priorities, manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.

  • Strong technology user skills (e.g. Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Photoshop and/or InDesign).

  • Strong written, oral and presentation skills.

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and demonstrated service orientation.

  • Ability to work in a fast paced changing environment.

  • Ability to work independently and achieve results as part of a team.

Physical Requirements:

  • Involves work of a general office nature usually performed sitting, such as answering the phone and operation of a computer.

  • Involves work of a general office nature usually performed standing, such as operation of a photocopier and a fax machine.

  • Involves movement between departments to facilitate workflow.
